PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)
Chronic Tendon Injuries - Sports Injuries - Arthritis
What is PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)?
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is a concentrated injection of platelets that contains hundreds of proteins called growth factors. These growth factors are important for the healing of injuries and tendonopathies
The concentration of growth factors in PRP is 5-10x greater than what is found in whole blood
Many professional athletes including Tiger Woods and Rafael Nadal have received PRP injections for the treatment of tendon and sports related injuries*
How is PRP performed?
PRP is an office based procedure scheduled similarly to a regular appointment
PRP is harvested via a simple blood draw performed in the office
The platelets are then concentrated through a process called centrifugation which separates the platelets from the whole blood. The process takes 20-30 minutes.
PRP is the injected into the injured or affected area
Studies have shown that some tendon problems have improved outcomes with PRP injections. Research is ongoing.
